The Seattle Mariners have brought up outfielder from Triple-A Tacoma just in time for their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Monday night, the place where Canzone first broke into the major leagues. The Mariners are hoping his bat can inject some much-needed power into their struggling offense.

To open a spot on the active 26-man roster, Seattle designated outfielder Leody Taveras for assignment.

Canzone, 27, was originally drafted in the eighth round by Arizona in 2018 and appeared in 15 MLB games for the Diamondbacks before being traded to Seattle at the 2023 deadline in a four-player deal that sent reliever Paul Sewald to Arizona.

He’s been one of the Pacific Coast League’s top power hitters this year, blasting 13 home runs in 45 games—ranking sixth in the league and leading all players with fewer than 52 games played.

The Mariners have been searching for an offensive spark after a significant drop in production. Despite catcher Cal Raleigh leading the majors with 26 home runs, the rest of the lineup has struggled since early May. Seattle led MLB in April with 39 home runs but fell to 11th in May (33) and sits tied for 24th so far in June with just five, four of which came from Raleigh.

This power slump has directly impacted their run scoring: 138 runs in April (5th in MLB), 109 in May (20th), and just 21 in their first seven June games (26th).

Right field has been a particular weak spot following early-season injuries to Victor Robles and Luke Raley. Robles is recovering from a shoulder fracture and might return later this season, while Raley (oblique strain) is nearing a rehab stint.

Taveras, 26, joined the Mariners off waivers from Texas on May 6 after being DFA’d by the Rangers. In 26 games with Seattle, he hit just .174 (16-for-92) with two home runs, three doubles, three steals, and served as the primary right fielder.

Seattle snapped a five-game losing streak Sunday with a 3-2 win over the Angels behind a strong start from George Kirby. However, the team has gone 4-10 over its last 14 games and has scored more than four runs just four times during that stretch.

This marks Canzone’s second time with the big league club this year—he was previously hitless in two games in April. In Tacoma, he’s posted a .296/.360/.564 slash line with a .924 OPS in 2025.

Originally from the Cleveland area and a former Ohio State standout, Canzone has hit 14 home runs and owns a career MLB slash line of .206/.263/.387 (.650 OPS) over 128 games since debuting in 2023. He batted .220 with six homers in 59 games last year and .196 with eight long balls in 67 games so far this season.

Seattle Sports’ radio broadcast of Monday’s game against Arizona begins at 5:30 p.m. Emerson Hancock (5.19 ERA) will start for the Mariners, opposing Merrill Kelly (3.42 ERA) of the Diamondbacks.
