NHL insider Darren Dreger has confirmed that the Toronto Maple Leafs are close to signing former Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty.

There had been speculation that the Leafs might offer Pacioretty a professional tryout (PTO), but instead, they have opted for a standard contract, according to Dreger.
I would expect Pacioretty and Hakanpaa to be next in line as Leafs adds. It was important to get Robertson done to avoid the possibility of an offer sheet. https://t.co/45RJnN1HHC

Hearing same re Leafs/Pacioretty. This would be a SPC, not a PTO, if they agree to terms. https://t.co/CNJA8Y2KWR

Pacioretty is expected to be a great addition to the Leafs’ top-six forward group, likely playing alongside John Tavares and Mitch Marner. He will bring valuable experience and leadership to the team’s younger players.
No doubt injuries are a concern but for cheap, this could be a very valuable add.

Drafted 22nd overall by the Canadiens in the first round of the 2007 NHL Draft, Pacioretty played 902 NHL games, recording 330 goals and 338 assists, totaling 668 points.
Last season, he appeared in only 47 games with the Washington Capitals due to injuries, tallying four goals and 19 assists for 23 points. He aims to bounce back with the Leafs.
