The Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive struggles likely kept them out of the playoffs last season, and that side of the ball still looks like a concern heading into 2025.
With the team committing big money to long-term deals for star receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, the defense has had to make do with more limited resources for rebuilding.
That financial reality may push Cincinnati to target short-term, budget-friendly options in free agency to address gaps—particularly in the secondary—as the front office looks to build a cost-effective, yet solid, defense through the draft.
One potential fit is veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, a former Defensive Player of the Year who spent the 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year, $7 million deal.

Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report recently identified Cincinnati as a prime landing spot for Gilmore.
After finishing 21st in passing yards allowed, 25th in total defense, and 25th in points allowed last year, the Bengals responded by making major defensive changes. They fired coordinator Lou Anarumo and brought in Al Golden, also signing defensive lineman T.J. Slaton and linebacker Oren Burks. However, they’ve yet to address the cornerback position.
Gilmore, who turns 35 in September, could provide stability and leadership during this transition. While he hasn’t made a Pro Bowl in three years, he was a consistent presence for the Vikings in 2024, starting 15 games and recording nine pass breakups and one interception. Spotrac estimates his market value at $5.3 million for another one-year deal.
