Breaking: Another Saints Super Star Prepared To Pause Contract Talks Until 2025

Alvin Kamara expressed interest in renegotiating his contract this offseason, but no agreement was reached between the Pro Bowl running back and the New Orleans Saints. With no deal in place, both sides are now focused on the 2024 season.

Kamara has two years left on his contract, but his 2025 season includes a non-guaranteed base salary of $22.4 million. Without a restructure, release, or trade, the Saints would face a cap charge of just over $29 million next year. Aware of how unlikely that scenario is, the 29-year-old departed the team’s minicamp early to push for a new deal.

In 2024, Kamara is set to earn $11.8 million, likely marking the final year of his $75 million extension signed in 2020. The running back market has lagged behind other positions since then, and Kamara’s age is a factor against him securing a lucrative third contract. He did not hold out during training camp, but with the regular season approaching, negotiations have stalled and Kamara plans to resume talks in the spring (video link via Fletcher Mackel of WDSU).

Kamara had limited leverage in contract discussions, which reportedly did not lead to significant progress, due to the remaining term on his deal. A strong performance in 2024 could bolster his bargaining position after a down year in 2023 when he set career lows in rushing yards (694) and total yards from scrimmage (1,160). Kamara missed three games due to suspension and was limited to just 12 games overall; staying healthy could lead to a rebound in his production. Previous comments suggested Kamara would take this approach.

The Saints’ backfield also features veteran Jamaal Williams, 2023 third-round pick Kendre Miller, and undrafted rookie Jordan Mims. Kamara is set to be the lead back once again, and his performance this season will heavily influence the Saints’ decisions regarding his contract next offseason.
