The San Francisco Giants officially placed right-hander on the 15-day injured list Friday with left knee inflammation, though it’s still unclear how long he’ll be out.
He underwent an MRI on Thursday in San Francisco after being hit in the knee by a Ramón Laureano line drive during the third inning of Wednesday’s 8-1 loss to the Padres. He had to be carted off with a heavy brace on his leg, but the MRI results have not yet been disclosed.

The Giants, who open a three-game set in Milwaukee against the NL-leading Brewers (80-48), sit at 61-67 after dropping three straight. They’re now six games under .500 for the first time this year and 6.5 games back of the Mets for the final NL Wild Card, with 34 games left.
Roupp has been a steady piece in the rotation this season, going 7-7 with a 3.80 ERA across 22 starts and 106.2 innings. The injury comes just a week after he returned from a 15-day IL stint with right elbow inflammation.

“It’s really tough, especially for him, but for us too,” shortstop Willy Adames said Wednesday. “He’s been so good all year. He just got back, and now this happens—it’s just sad.”
In a corresponding move, San Francisco recalled lefty Carson Whisenhunt, who will start Friday. The rookie is 1-1 with a 5.02 ERA in three outings (14.1 innings). His most recent start came Aug. 8 against Washington, when he struck out five but gave up three home runs in four innings of a 4-2 loss.
