It’s time for another round of NHL rumors. With the Stanley Cup Final just a day away, attention is already shifting toward the off-season. Teams that didn’t make it deep into the playoffs are now evaluating their next steps. Some franchises made aggressive moves at the trade deadline, but most fell short of capturing the Stanley Cup.
One of those bold teams was the Colorado Avalanche, and this edition of NHL rumors explores the possibility of them re-signing a player they acquired at the deadline.
As always, all NHL rumors are based on original reports and may be subject to change.

Interest on Both Sides in Extending Colorado Avalanche Forward
Analysis: Nelson joined the Avalanche from the New York Islanders at the trade deadline in a deal that sent top prospect Calum Ritchie and a 2026 first-round pick the other way. It was a steep price for Colorado GM Chris MacFarland to pay, and the team was ultimately bounced in the first round by the Dallas Stars.
There appears to be mutual interest from both the Avalanche and Brock Nelson in exploring a new contract. How that may look is too early to tell, but Nelson is open to that possibility and talks between the Avs & his agent are expected to pick up in June.

Initially, Avalanche fans were concerned that Nelson might be just a short-term addition. But now, it appears there’s mutual interest in extending the relationship, which could help soften the blow of losing Ritchie and the valuable draft pick.
Nelson contributed six goals and 13 points over 19 games with Colorado. Though the team had Stanley Cup ambitions, those hopes were dashed by their Central Division rivals from Dallas. Nelson didn’t score in the seven-game series but did notch four assists.
While the outcome wasn’t what either side hoped for, both are still aiming for another championship. A contract extension might be the next step in that pursuit.
What it Means
The Avalanche retain exclusive negotiating rights with Nelson until July 1. While a deal is possible, the question remains: what will the cap hit be? Colorado enters the offseason with \$8.7 million in salary cap space and only a few roster spots left to fill before the 2025–26 season begins.

Finding a second-line center remains a key need, and Nelson could be a viable answer. The Avalanche lack depth down the middle, and re-signing the Warroad, Minnesota native might be the simplest fix. Nelson’s previous contracts with the Islanders carried a \$6 million cap hit, but the value of his next deal is still uncertain.
Contract length and salary must be addressed before progress can be made. Would Nelson consider a pay cut to remain with a contender? Might he agree to a deal with moderate term? These are questions GM Chris MacFarland and Nelson will need to sort out.
If an extension can’t be reached, Colorado may have to explore trade options to fill the second-line center role — likely requiring the Avalanche to part with meaningful assets to acquire the right player.
