The Red Sox added to their minor league pitching depth on Monday by finalizing a trade with the Brewers that began last month.
Boston received right-handed pitcher from Milwaukee to complete the April 7 deal that sent righty Quinn Priester to the Brewers.
In return, the Red Sox had initially acquired outfielder Yophery Rodriguez, a competitive balance draft pick (33rd overall this year), and either a player to be named later or cash — Holobetz is now confirmed as that player.
A native of Pennsylvania, Holobetz was drafted by the Brewers in the fifth round (156th overall) last year out of Old Dominion University and signed for $322,500, below slot value.
He made his pro debut this season with Single-A Carolina, where he’s posted a 3.00 ERA (8 earned runs over 34 innings), with 31 strikeouts, five walks, and a .180 opponent batting average (16-for-89). Holobetz primarily pitched in relief during college at Radford and ODU.
Since joining the Brewers, Priester has pitched in five games (four starts), recording a 5.79 ERA over 23 ⅓ innings. While he started strong with a 1.93 ERA through his first three outings, he has struggled recently, allowing 12 runs and 14 hits in his last 9 ⅓ innings.
