The 2025 NFL Draft has concluded, and the New Orleans Saints made waves by selecting Tyler Shough in the second round. While the Louisville quarterback had been gaining traction on draft boards, few anticipated he would be picked before Shedeur Sanders.
The Saints clearly saw potential in Shough, particularly with their quarterback situation. With Derek Carr possibly sidelined for the 2025 season, the choice was either to have Spencer Rattler as the starter or bring in a new quarterback. While Rattler could still take the helm, Shough offers a promising option for the future.

As a result of Shough’s addition, some changes were necessary to the quarterback lineup. The sacrifice was Ben DiNucci, who was released by the Saints on Tuesday. DiNucci shared the news on social media, writing, “The NFL is a tough business. Always has been and always will be. Got released by the Saints this morning. Control what I can control and go back to work.” He ended the post with a hang loose emoji.
Saints release Ben DiNucci after adding Tyler Shough to roster
This isn’t a surprise for Saints fans. Carr, Rattler, and Shough are staying for now, and keeping Jake Haener makes sense in case Carr can’t play this year, as he provides a third-string option. DiNucci was initially signed as the fourth option for training camp and preseason, but once Shough was drafted, his chances of making the team diminished.

DiNucci wasn’t a bad choice as a fourth-string quarterback. He’s had a journeyman career since 2020, playing in three games with the Cowboys that year. Since then, he’s been with the Broncos, Bills, and Saints, but hasn’t seen any game action with those teams.
Shough will have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback role, and it will be interesting to see how the competition develops.
