The St. Louis Cardinals announced Wednesday night that they have released former catcher Chance Sisco from his minor league contract.

Sisco, once considered a promising prospect, was drafted in the second round by the Baltimore Orioles in 2013. The 30-year-old spent five seasons (2017–2021) in the majors with the Orioles and New York Mets, recording 608 career plate appearances. Over his career, he hit 16 home runs, drove in 54 RBIs, and posted a .197/.317/.337 slash line.

The decision to release Sisco followed a disappointing spring training performance, during which he only had nine at-bats, struck out six times, and failed to record a hit.

With veteran Willson Contreras set to play first base, the Cardinals will likely rely on Iván Herrera and Pedro Pagés for the majority of the catching duties.

Herrera, 24, enters his fourth season with the Cardinals, having played 56 games behind the plate last year, a significant increase from his second season. He is expected to have a similar role in 2025.

Pagés, 26, played 68 games in his first season with the Cardinals last year. After being drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 MLB Draft, the Venezuelan catcher spent four years working his way up through the Cardinals’ minor league system.

St. Louis is focusing on a younger duo behind the plate as they aim to create a solid catching tandem.

For the starting role, the Cardinals may lean toward Herrera due to his stronger offensive performance. He finished last season with a .301 batting average, while Pagés hit .238 in his debut season with the team.

With the season approaching, the Cardinals are continuing to finalize their roster for the 2025 MLB season.
