The Cincinnati Reds have signed catcher Jose Trevino to a three-year, $15 million contract extension, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post. With Tyler Stephenson sidelined due to a spring training injury, Trevino will take over as the team’s starting catcher until Stephenson’s return.
Acquired from the New York Yankees in December in exchange for Fernando Cruz, Trevino is now set to remain in Cincinnati for the foreseeable future. He was already under contract for the 2025 season at $3.4 million, and the extension secures his spot with the Reds through 2027, with a club option for 2028.

Before the 2022 season, the Yankees acquired Jose Trevino as a defensive specialist to pair with Kyle Higashioka. In his debut season with New York, Trevino exceeded expectations, earning his first All-Star selection and becoming the first American League catcher to win a Platinum Glove.
However, Trevino is coming off a down year in which he batted .215 with 8 home runs and 28 RBIs, ultimately losing the starting role to Austin Wells. Despite his offensive struggles, he remains a defense-first catcher with elite plate discipline and strong bat-to-ball skills, making him a likely fit in the lower part of the Reds’ lineup.
Cincinnati is counting on Trevino’s defensive expertise to support what could be one of the National League’s top rotations in 2025. A former Platinum Glove winner, he excels in fielding run value and blocking but ranks among the league’s weakest catchers in throwing out baserunners.
His presence behind the plate could be a key factor for a Reds rotation led by Hunter Greene and newcomer Brady Singer, along with young arms Andrew Abbott, Nick Lodolo, and Rhett Lowder. With no clear favorite in the NL Central, Trevino’s elite framing skills could provide a crucial edge.
Trevino will handle starting catcher duties while Tyler Stephenson recovers from a low-grade internal left oblique strain suffered during spring training. His primary backup is expected to be Triple-A catcher Austin Wynns, who had a brief stint with the Reds in 2024.
