Whenever a player is initially listed in the starting lineup but then removed, fans often fear the worst. Atlanta Braves supporters experienced a similar reaction when top prospect Drake Baldwin was unexpectedly scratched from this afternoon’s spring training game against the Orioles.
However, the situation turned out to be far less concerning. The Braves later clarified that Baldwin was removed as a precaution due to an allergic reaction, with veteran catcher Sandy León stepping in.

Reports from David O’Brien of The Athletic and Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution indicate that Baldwin is expected to recover quickly, possibly as soon as tomorrow.

Braves dodge bullet and avoid another injury to their catching depth
The Braves’ catchers have had a rough start to spring training, with primary backstop Sean Murphy already ruled out for Opening Day after being hit by a pitch. As a result, Drake Baldwin has emerged as the likely candidate to step in, and he’s been making a strong case with his spring performance.

Baldwin has impressed at the plate, going 7-for-19 while posting an outstanding .520 on-base percentage. His plate discipline has been remarkable, drawing six walks compared to just one strikeout.
Any long-term health issues for Baldwin would have put the Braves in a tough spot at catcher, but recent injury updates have been more reassuring than concerning.
In other good news, Jurickson Profar returned to camp this morning and expressed confidence in being ready for Opening Day. Braves fans can breathe a little easier, hoping to move past the injury struggles that defined the 2024 season.
Looking ahead, Baldwin will continue to see plenty of action for the rest of spring training. Not only does he need to get comfortable facing Major League pitching, but he also must build chemistry with Atlanta’s staff in preparation for 2025.
Having a veteran presence like Chris Sale should help guide the soon-to-be 24-year-old until Sean Murphy is back to full health.
The Braves will get their first look at the 2025 Phillies tomorrow afternoon, so it remains to be seen if Baldwin returns to the lineup against their NL East rivals.
