Another season, another injury setback for Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story. Boston scratched him from the lineup Tuesday due to mild upper back tightness, though manager Alex Cora expects him to return Wednesday against the Twins.
Even minor injuries raise concerns for Story, who has struggled to stay on the field since signing a six-year, $140 million deal in 2022. The two-time All-Star has appeared in just 163 games over three seasons, missing most of 2023 with a dislocated shoulder.
This is a stark contrast to his durability with the Rockies, where he played at least 140 games in four of five full seasons and 59 of 60 games in 2020.

Frustrated Red Sox fans were quick to react on social media, with one calling Story an “under-the-radar all-time suck signing” and another sarcastically predicting his return in August.
Many shared the infamous Heath Ledger Joker GIF: “And here we go.” Others referred to him as “Trevor Glass” while calling for top prospect Marcelo Mayer to take over.
If Story’s back issue lingers, the Red Sox could turn to former Astros All-Star Alex Bregman at shortstop or give Mayer a shot. Meanwhile, reporter Chris Cotillo dismissed the online overreactions, telling fans their takes were a “waste of time.”
