JUST IN: Gayle Benson official statement after death of Southern University student

Gayle Benson issued a statement Thursday mourning the loss of Caleb Wilson, a 20-year-old Southern University student from Kenner whose father, a longtime Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office deputy, worked security for the New Orleans Saints owner.

Wilson passed away Thursday morning at a hospital after being found unresponsive in a Baton Rouge park. He was transported to the hospital by individuals who discovered him unconscious, according to police reports. His cause of death remains under investigation.

A junior majoring in mechanical engineering, Wilson was a member of Southern’s renowned Human Jukebox marching band and the Nu Phi Omicron music fraternity. He previously attended Warren Easton High School in New Orleans and participated in The Roots of Music Marching Crusaders band.

His father, Corey Wilson, retired as a sergeant after 35 years with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and continues to serve in a part-time capacity. Benson expressed her sorrow in a statement, highlighting her close connection to the Wilson family:

“Today, we are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of Caleb Wilson, a very bright, young Southern University student. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the entire Southern University community during this incredibly difficult time.

This tragic loss has hit very close to my heart as his father, (Sgt.) Corey Wilson has worked with our team for many years. I have a deep and personal connection to his family. We mourn with him today on this senseless passing, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joseph Lopinto also extended his condolences, emphasizing the department’s support for Wilson’s family and asking for privacy during their time of mourning.

Southern University acknowledged Wilson’s passing in a statement, particularly offering support to his mother, who is a student at the university’s New Orleans campus.
