While much of the focus on the Boston Red Sox’s offseason has been on big names like Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler, and Alex Bregman, one signing that hasn’t received enough attention is left-handed pitcher Patrick Sandoval.
Signed to a two-year, $18.25 million contract in December, Sandoval is currently working his way back from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent in June. Despite this, manager Alex Cora has high expectations for him as a significant contributor to the team in the latter half of 2025.

Cora has praised Sandoval for his focus during the rehab process, emphasizing the value he’ll bring when healthy. “If it happens, it’s a lefty with a good fastball. He’s been there, done that,” Cora said. “He’s a guy who we faced a few times, and that four-seamer takes off.
He’s a good dude, great guy, happy. He brings experience, too. He can talk to guys. Whenever he gets here, he’s gonna be a big addition for us.”
Although Sandoval had a rough 2024 season with the Los Angeles Angels, posting a 5.08 ERA in 79.2 innings, his 3.87 FIP suggests there’s quality behind those numbers. He also averaged 9.2 strikeouts per nine innings, demonstrating solid stuff.

Compared to Nick Pivetta, who had issues with home runs (averaging 1.5 HR/9 over his five seasons with the Red Sox), Sandoval has been effective at keeping the ball in the park, with a career HR/9 of just 0.9.
While it remains to be seen how much Sandoval will contribute to the 2025 Red Sox, his signing provides a promising addition to the team’s pitching depth for the future. With his experience and ability to limit home runs, he could play an important role in the rotation once fully recovered.
