Being a fan favorite isn’t always about being the best player on the field. While LA Chargers fans admire stars like Justin Herbert and Derwin James for their talent, not every beloved player is a superstar. Sometimes, a fanbase connects with a player for different reasons.
One of the more unexpected fan favorites in recent years was tight end. Standing at six-foot-eight with a lanky frame, He had a unique presence on the field. His journey from the XFL to the NFL—and his reputation as a “Madden” standout—earned him the affectionate nickname “Chicken Parm” among Chargers fans.
However, His time with the team came to an end in 2024 when the new coaching staff opted not to keep him. Due to his limitations as a blocker, the Chargers released him before the season, despite having limited depth at tight end. He later joined the Denver Broncos’ practice squad but never saw game action.

After the 2024 season, the Broncos chose not to offer Parham a futures contract, leaving his NFL career in doubt. But a month later, the Pittsburgh Steelers stepped in, signing him to a one-year deal and giving him another shot in the league.
Steelers sign former Chargers fan favorite Donald Parham
Parham will need to prove himself in training camp to secure a roster spot. The Steelers currently have five tight ends on the roster, but behind Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington, there’s an opportunity for him to emerge as the team’s TE3.
His biggest weakness—blocking—could be a challenge on a Mike Tomlin-led team, which values physicality. However, Parham brings receiving ability, something the Steelers lack at the position. If he can showcase that skill in camp, he may carve out a role.

Interestingly, the Steelers’ tight end room includes two players Chargers fans once hoped to see together in Los Angeles. Many wanted the team to draft Washington in 2023 due to his imposing size and blocking prowess.
At six-foot-seven with a long frame, Washington is essentially the blocking counterpart to Parham. While he has developed as a pass-catcher, his primary strength remains as an in-line blocker.
Had things gone differently, this duo could have been in Los Angeles. Instead, if Parham makes the Steelers’ roster, Chargers fans will get a glimpse of what might have been—in Pittsburgh. If he doesn’t, he could find himself on the practice squad, potentially fading from the NFL.
