The Cincinnati Bengals endured a difficult 2024 season, finishing with a disappointing record and missing the playoffs.
Despite high expectations following their Super Bowl appearance, the team struggled with inconsistency and defensive lapses, leading to a series of frustrating losses.
One player who faced heavy scrutiny was safety Geno Stone. After signing a two-year, $14 million contract in the offseason, he was expected to strengthen the Bengals’ secondary. However, his performance fell short of expectations, leading to speculation that the team might consider releasing him to free up cap space.

MLFootball even named Stone the Bengals’ worst free agency signing of the year, underscoring the gap between expectations and reality.
Despite the criticism, Stone remained determined to improve. Addressing the team’s defensive struggles and his own play on X, he wrote, “A lot more went into that, but no excuses next year I’m back on my [expletive].”

Statistically, Stone recorded 64 solo tackles, 4 interceptions, and 6 passes defended, but his impact was seen as underwhelming. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) grade of 53.1 ranked 59th out of 66 qualified safeties, and he tied for 127th in solo tackles. These struggles have put him at risk of being cut as the Bengals look to upgrade their roster.
Stone’s response reflects his determination to rebound in the upcoming season. As Cincinnati evaluates its roster, his commitment to improvement could factor into their defensive plans.
Additionally, the Bengals must address contract situations for Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. With their extensions uncertain, cutting a player like Stone could provide much-needed financial flexibility.
