This offseason, Georgia football has strengthened its roster by bringing in several talented players through the transfer portal. Among them are two starting wide receivers and key additions to the secondary.
As February approaches, discussions around the transfer portal will likely slow down until after spring practice. However, Georgia had its sights set on one more transfer—Ohio State defensive lineman Hero Kanu.
Kanu spent the past two seasons at Ohio State, recording 14 tackles and one sack. While these numbers may not stand out, he was a highly regarded four-star prospect coming out of high school. Georgia and head coach Kirby Smart hosted Kanu for a visit to Athens on Tuesday, with expectations that he would announce his commitment shortly after.
That’s exactly what he did on Wednesday morning.
Kanu is heading to Texas
According to Hayes Fawcett of On3, Kanu officially announced his commitment to Texas on Wednesday morning.

While losing a recruiting battle—especially to an SEC rival Georgia will face in the future—is never ideal, this particular loss isn’t too concerning. For one, Kanu has yet to prove himself at the collegiate level. That’s not to say he lacks talent or potential, but he’s unlikely to make an immediate impact in his first season.
Additionally, Georgia still has time to bring in transfers if Kirby Smart and his staff decide it’s necessary. While no immediate moves are expected, the Bulldogs will likely revisit the transfer portal after spring practice.
Ultimately, while securing Kanu would have been a nice win, there’s no need for panic. Georgia can still add a defensive lineman later in the year if needed, and even if they don’t, the program has a strong track record of developing top-tier talent at the position. The Bulldogs already have plenty of elite players in their defensive front.
