The ongoing Red Sox-Alex Bregman saga has taken another intriguing twist. Bregman, widely regarded as the top hitter remaining in free agency, has been linked to Boston throughout the offseason.

While some recent reports suggest the Red Sox are still the frontrunners to sign Bregman, others indicate they might prioritize trading for Nolan Arenado instead.

Adding to the speculation, former MLB player Carlos Baerga, who briefly played for the Red Sox in 2002, claimed last week that Boston was making a strong push to sign Bregman to a three-year deal. Baerga’s credibility has been questioned in the past, leading many to dismiss the rumor.

Alex Bregman standoff could play right into Red Sox hands

However, on Tuesday, Baerga doubled down on his claim, posting on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that the Red Sox could finalize a deal with Bregman within days, envisioning him as their second baseman.

Despite Baerga’s assertion, Jared Carrabis, a prominent baseball media personality and passionate Red Sox fan, expressed skepticism. Carrabis, who has dabbled in insider reporting, described Baerga’s claim as “premature.”

Ultimately, it’s wise to treat these rumors with caution. Without confirmation from trusted league insiders, offseason speculation should be taken with a grain of salt.

Bregman, who turns 31 in March, hit .260 with 26 home runs and posted a .768 OPS over 145 games with the Houston Astros last season.
