He might be on the move again this offseason, and the Indianapolis Colts could be a potential landing spot.
A few years ago, Wilson was considered one of the NFL’s elite quarterbacks. While that’s no longer the case, he remains a capable veteran presence.
This season, Wilson started out injured but eventually replaced Justin Fields as the Steelers’ starting quarterback, leading them to a playoff appearance. Unfortunately for Pittsburgh, their run ended with a 28-14 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Wild Card Round.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Steelers’ quarterback situation remains uncertain. Both Wilson and Fields are set to hit free agency in March, and fellow free agent Sam Darnold could be an appealing option for Pittsburgh.
If Darnold, Aaron Rodgers, or another quarterback joins the Steelers, Wilson may need to find a new team—and Indianapolis could emerge as a viable destination.
The Indianapolis Colts Should Consider Signing Russell Wilson
Looking Back at His Career
The Seattle Seahawks drafted Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Initially, he was expected to serve as a backup to Matt Flynn, who had just joined the team as a free agent. However, Wilson surprised many by winning the starting quarterback role.

Wilson became a standout player in Seattle. Over his 10 seasons with the team, he earned nine Pro Bowl selections, a spot on the All-Pro second team, and led the NFL in passer rating in 2015 and passing touchdowns in 2017. Most notably, he guided the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances, securing a victory in one of them.
In the 2022 offseason, Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos, where he spent two seasons without making the playoffs. Following his release by Denver, he signed a one-year contract with the Steelers last offseason.
Why the Colts Should Consider Signing Him
During his year-end press conference, Colts general manager Chris Ballard mentioned that the team plans to bring in some competition for quarterback Anthony Richardson. This could be a smart move, as it might motivate Richardson to elevate his game.
It will be intriguing to see who Ballard decides to add. Possible options could include Daniel Jones, Mac Jones, or Jameis Winston. However, the Colts should also consider signing Russell Wilson if he doesn’t return to Pittsburgh.
While Wilson is no longer the superstar capable of leading a team to a Super Bowl, and at 36 years old, he’s past his prime, he still has enough left in the tank to guide a team to the playoffs, as he demonstrated this season.
Richardson has dealt with injuries throughout his career so far, and there’s a chance he could miss games next season. In such a scenario, Wilson could step in as a capable starter.
Even when healthy, Richardson has struggled, completing just 47.7% of his passes this season. Wilson could provide valuable mentorship to the 22-year-old. As a nine-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl champion, and potential Hall of Famer, Wilson’s experience could be instrumental in helping Richardson develop.
