The Boston Red Sox provided an unexpected reason for Rafael Devers’ absence from their FanFest lineup.
Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reported that Devers had a last-minute scheduling conflict, preventing him from attending this weekend’s “Fenway Fest.”
Initially, players like Walker Buehler and Kutter Crawford were also slated to appear, but as Cotillo pointed out, both were removed from the updated attendee list on the team’s website Friday.
Devers, 28, inked a 10-year, $313.5 million deal with the Red Sox before last season, committing to Boston through 2033. However, this offseason has been rife with speculation about a potential position change for the three-time All-Star.

The Red Sox have been linked to elite third basemen Alex Bregman, a free agent, and Nolan Arenado, who the Cardinals are reportedly shopping in trade talks. Many have proposed that Devers shift away from third base, a position he’s held since debuting with Boston in 2017, as both Bregman and Arenado are considered superior defensively.
Boston’s pursuit of Bregman and Arenado has fueled speculation about Devers’ future at the position, and his absence from FanFest only heightened curiosity. However, Cotillo clarified that Devers, a native of the Dominican Republic, won’t be joining his teammates for a far less dramatic reason: a simple scheduling conflict.
