The San Francisco Giants were reportedly among the teams seriously considering signing first baseman Paul Goldschmidt this offseason. However, on Saturday afternoon, Goldschmidt reached a one-year, $12.5 million agreement with the New York Yankees.

How will the Giants react to missing out on Goldschmidt?

FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently suggested that the Giants could shift their focus to New York Mets power hitter Pete Alonso in free agency after their Goldschmidt pursuit fell short.

Mets' Pete Alonso off to slow start offensively

“The Mets are still a possible fit, but why shouldn’t the Giants take advantage of a clearly weak market? Alonso is likely looking for a big contract, but with few viable suitors, he may not get the payday he expects,” Rotman said.

“If the Giants can secure him on a deal similar to those they gave Blake Snell and Matt Chapman last offseason, Alonso would be a great addition.”

“He’d bring another powerful bat to the lineup and boost the Giants’ Wild Card chances while leaving the door open for him to either sign a long-term deal with San Francisco or cash in next offseason (like Snell).”

The Giants’ pursuit of Alonso may depend on the outcome of Corbin Burnes’ free agency. Currently, the Giants are believed to be the frontrunners for Burnes, which could limit their ability to sign Alonso.

However, if San Francisco misses out on Burnes, they would still need to allocate their funds, and securing a consistent 40-home run hitter like Alonso would be an excellent way to strengthen the team.
