The Seattle Mariners are navigating unfamiliar waters this offseason. In the past, Jerry Dipoto and Justin Hollander have typically acted quickly, striking deals around Thanksgiving in 2016 and signing Mitch Garver shortly after Christmas. Dipoto’s strategy has often been to move swiftly and stay ahead of the market.
However, as Christmas approaches and 2025 looms, the Mariners still have several gaps to address. While the team remains open to trade discussions involving their starting pitchers, a familiar trade partner could be the key to addressing one of their biggest needs.
Spencer Steer could be ideal trade target this offseason for Mariners

On Wednesday evening, rumors emerged that the Cincinnati Reds were open to trading utility player Spencer Steer. A name familiar to Mariners fans, Steer has shown promise as a young and dynamic offensive contributor.
The 25-year-old had a breakout 2023 season, posting a .271/.356/.464 slash line with 23 home runs and 15 stolen bases. His advanced approach at the plate was evident in his 117 wRC+ and a 20.9% strikeout rate, especially impressive considering he had played just 28 major league games before the 2023 season.
In 2024, Steer’s performance dipped slightly. His slash line fell to .225/.319/.402 with 20 home runs, though he upped his stolen base tally to 25. He maintained good plate discipline with a 20.9% strikeout rate and an 11% walk rate. However, his overall 96 wRC+ reflected some regression, although his road performance (107 wRC+) offers reasons for optimism.
Defensively, Steer isn’t elite but can fill in at any corner infield or outfield position and even play a bit at second base. Being pre-arbitration, he remains an affordable asset—something Mariners executives Dipoto, Hollander, and John Stanton would likely value. Adding to the appeal, Steer is a local product from the University of Oregon, further boosting the case for his acquisition.
Last offseason, trading for Steer was a popular topic among Mariners fans. While his value may have declined since then, he could still provide a spark to a lineup in need of excitement.
