The promising offseason for Boston is quickly turning into a disappointment. Every team that went after Juan Soto, except for the Mets, is regretting his decision. The Boston Red Sox are feeling that familiar frustration as well.
The team’s pursuit of Garrett Crochet has also hit a snag. It turns out that GM Craig Breslow’s attention isn’t solely on landing Crochet. Given the steep asking price, it’s understandable if Boston decides to pass on the talented left-hander. But what does this mean for the Red Sox?

Boston’s pitching staff struggled in 2024, posting a 4.04 ERA, which ranked 17th in MLB. While their offense was solid, it wasn’t enough to get them into the postseason, as they fell 5 games short of a Wild Card spot. With Triston Casas in the lineup, their offense could get a boost, but after losing Tyler O’Neill, there’s not enough power to make them a serious contender. However, there may still be a solution—if the Astros can be convinced to agree.
Trading Kyle Tucker and Framber Valdez to the Red Sox
Boston Red Sox Receive:
- OF Kyle Tucker
- LHP Framber Valdez
Houston Astros Receive:
- SS Franklin Arias (MLB Pipeline #95)
- OF Miguel Bleis (Red Sox #8 prospect)
- C Brooks Brannon (Red Sox #27 prospect)
The Houston Astros, facing pressure to manage their payroll after another disappointing postseason, are looking to make strategic moves this offseason. Having been swept in the Wild Card round by the Tigers following a strong AL Central finish in 2024, the Astros are shifting focus. With two star players—Framber Valdez and Kyle Tucker—set to become free agents after 2025, the Red Sox are in a good position to make a deal, as both players fill critical gaps for Boston.
Valdez, coming off a stellar 2.91 ERA season with 169 strikeouts in 176.1 innings, has consistently been among the top pitchers in the league. Over his seven-year career, he has maintained a 3.30 ERA and has been a Cy Young contender multiple times. Meanwhile, Tucker, a Gold Glove-winning outfielder, posted an impressive .289/.408/.585 line with 23 home runs despite missing time due to injury. His ability to drive in runs and hit for power, along with his speed, makes him a valuable asset for the Red Sox lineup alongside players like Jarren Duran, Rafael Devers, and Triston Casas.
Astros GM Dana Brown has indicated he’s open to offers for Tucker but aims to retain him for the final year of his contract. Despite the short remaining time on both Tucker and Valdez’s contracts, the Astros would still require a strong return in any trade.
In exchange, the Red Sox would send top prospects to Houston. Franklin Arias, ranked as Boston’s #7 prospect, is a promising 19-year-old shortstop known for his high batting average and base-stealing ability. He’s projected to debut in 2028. Also included is Miguel Bleis, an athletic 20-year-old outfielder with power and speed but needing refinement in plate discipline. He could be ready for the majors by next year. Finally, Brooks Brannon, Boston’s #27 prospect and a 20-year-old catcher, offers raw power and a strong arm, though his contact skills and speed need development. He’s expected to debut by 2027.
