The Boston Red Sox seem to have a backup plan ready if they miss out on landing Juan Soto.

The team has been linked to Teoscar Hernández since the offseason began and remains active in the race for the power-hitting outfielder.

“Red Sox remain in on Teoscar Hernández but face stiff competition from Dodgers and Yankees, per source,” Chris Cotillo of MassLive shared on the X platform Saturday night. Cotillo also noted that Hernández’s market is expected to “heat up once Soto signs.”

Dodgers' Teoscar Hernandez Predicted to Sign With Surprise NL Team

If Soto doesn’t end up in Boston, Hernández would be a solid alternative. The two-time All-Star would come at a lower price and is coming off a strong season with the Dodgers, hitting a career-high 33 home runs along with 99 RBIs and a .272 batting average.

The 32-year-old could also be a logical replacement for Tyler O’Neill, who reportedly agreed to a deal with the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. Hernández has had success at Fenway Park, batting .282 with 14 home runs and 44 RBIs over 44 games.

Boston’s pursuit of Hernández will likely hinge on Soto’s decision, expected in the next day or two. However, the longer the team waits, the harder it could be to secure Hernández.
