The Red Sox are reportedly nearing a deal with a seasoned veteran, though it’s not Juan Soto—at least not yet.
Boston is expected to sign Aroldis Chapman to strengthen its bullpen. Chris Cotillo of MassLive first reported the progress on the deal Tuesday, followed by ESPN’s Jeff Passan, who shared details of the one-year, $10.75 million agreement, pending a physical.
Chapman, a seven-time All-Star from 2012 to 2021, was once among the most dominant relief pitchers in baseball. The two-time World Series champion brings extensive postseason experience, having pitched 49 1/3 innings in the playoffs.
At 36, Chapman is coming off a strong season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he logged 61 2/3 innings in 2024—his highest total since 2015. Before revitalizing his career in Pittsburgh, Chapman spent over six seasons in the AL East with the New York Yankees.
With this move, Chapman will join a Red Sox bullpen that was looking to add another left-hander. Earlier in the offseason, Boston also signed southpaw Justin Wilson to further bolster the group.
