The Boston Red Sox must make a major splash in this year’s free-agent market to position themselves as postseason contenders in 2025.
With the Los Angeles Dodgers recently signing two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell, Boston’s top remaining free-agent options are Corbin Burnes and Max Fried. Both pitchers are expected to draw heavy interest, which might push the Red Sox to explore trades to secure a true ace for next season. Recent expert commentary suggests a blockbuster deal could be on the horizon.
MLB Network’s Jon Morosi shared intriguing insight during Wednesday’s Hot Stove broadcast:
“Pay very close attention to the Boston Red Sox when it comes to a potential Garrett Crochet trade,” Morosi said. “They have the prospects, especially if they miss out on Burnes or Fried. And with Juan Soto’s situation still unfolding, Boston needs a big move after a disappointing season. If free agency doesn’t work out, or if Soto doesn’t land in Boston, keep an eye on a possible Crochet trade—they have the assets to make it happen.”
The White Sox, who endured an abysmal 121-loss season in 2024 and set a new low as baseball’s worst team in history, are far from contention. Trading Crochet could bring in much-needed prospects. With Boston boasting the league’s seventh-ranked farm system (per MLB.com), they have the resources to offer a competitive trade package for the talented left-hander.
The 25-year-old Crochet has a projected market value of around $130 million over seven years (approximately $19 million annually, per Spotrac), but he remains under team control through 2026. This means the Red Sox wouldn’t need to commit to a long-term, expensive deal to acquire him.
Would Boston be willing to part with several top prospects to bring the White Sox’s standout southpaw to Fenway this winter?
