The Red Sox appear to be exploring all options in their effort to return to playoff contention.

While much of the offseason buzz has centered on Boston’s pursuit of free agency’s top prize, Juan Soto, and their active involvement in the starting pitching market, there are additional ways for the team to strengthen its roster. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale highlighted one such possibility in a recent column.

“The Red Sox also have strong interest in All-Star free-agent shortstop Willy Adames, who is willing to move to third base,” Nightengale noted.

Boston reportedly has a meeting lined up with Adames, who could be a logical fit at third base if the team opts to shift Rafael Devers to a different position. The 29-year-old is durable, having missed only 14 games over the past two seasons, and brings over three years of experience in the AL East. Adames could also be a more cost-effective option than Alex Bregman and wouldn’t require a trade package like Nolan Arenado.

That said, Boston’s top priorities should remain securing starting pitching and staying in the mix for Soto until his future is decided. However, signing Adames could be a smart move if he’s still available after addressing their more critical needs.
