The San Diego Padres are loaded with talent, but could they benefit from adding even more?

According to Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, former New York Mets infielder is projected to join the San Diego Padres this offseason. Reuter, via Jackson Roberts of The Sporting News, highlighted the potential fit:

“With Luis Arraez and Jake Cronenworth both able to cover either position on the right side of the infield, and Xander Bogaerts versatile enough to play both middle infield spots, the Padres have various options for their infield targets,” Reuter explained.

He added, “Veteran José Iglesias could provide solid defense, exceptional contact-hitting ability, and serve as a second leadoff hitter in the No. 9 spot of the lineup.”

Iglesias excelled both offensively and defensively in his 12th MLB season in 2024. At 34 years old, he delivered an outstanding .337/.381/.448 slash line for the Mets, scoring an impressive 39 runs over 85 games and recording a solid .830 OPS.

Iglesias could give the Padres stout fielding and offensive jolt in 2025

The Cuban player showcased his versatility during the regular season, appearing at second base, third base, and shortstop. He recorded 91 putouts, 156 assists, turned 38 double plays, and made just three errors.

Ahead of the 2024 season, he signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with New York. This makes Iglesias a potentially budget-friendly option for San Diego, offering a veteran presence with a reliable bat to strengthen the lower part of their lineup and deliver exceptional infield defense. His impact, both in the regular season and postseason with the Mets, was understated but pivotal, making him a valuable addition to the Padres’ roster.
