The MLB offseason has arrived, and the Boston Red Sox are a team to watch for potential big moves. Despite finishing the season with a .500 record at 81-81, the Sox exceeded expectations and are well-positioned to improve. With a promising farm system and significant financial resources, they have the tools to strengthen their roster in the coming months.
While free agency offers a primary path for upgrades, Boston could also explore the trade market, where some high-profile players may be available. One name generating interest is St. Louis Cardinals third baseman. However, acquiring him could be complicated by his full no-trade clause.
“Don’t rule out some Red Sox interest in Nolan Arenado,” reported Sean McAdam of MassLive. “There’s been internal discussion about eventually moving Rafael Devers off third base, and Arenado is seen as a potential Plan B. The Cardinals, mindful of their payroll, might be open to trading him if a team is willing to absorb most of his remaining contract. One potential hurdle: Arenado’s no-trade clause.”
Red Sox could add big right-handed bat to lineup in Nolan Arenado
The Red Sox have made it clear they’re in the market for right-handed hitters to strengthen their lineup, a priority made even more urgent with Tyler O’Neill likely leaving in free agency.

Despite a slight dip in his recent production, Nolan Arenado remains a formidable player, hitting .272 with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs last season. Additionally, Arenado’s elite defensive skills at third base could allow Boston to shift Rafael Devers, whose performance at the position has been inconsistent, to a designated hitter role.
That said, even if the Red Sox assemble a trade package appealing to the Cardinals, Arenado’s no-trade clause could complicate matters if he decides against a move. While Boston might target the veteran third baseman, his ability to veto a trade is a significant factor to consider in their plans.
