The 2024 college football season has witnessed the resurgence of several historic programs, reclaiming the elite status that once defined them.
The No. 5 Texas Longhorns have made a strong return, capturing their first conference title since 2009 last season and positioning themselves for another College Football Playoff appearance.
The Miami Hurricanes have also re-emerged on the national stage, debuting as the No. 4 team in the initial 12-team College Football Playoff rankings earlier this week. While Miami’s defense may not match the powerhouse squads of the past, they boast one of the nation’s top quarterbacks, Cam Ward.

The Washington State transfer has been instrumental all season, and in Week 11’s game against Georgia Tech, he made history. With Miami trailing 7-0, Ward connected with Elijay Arroyo for a 74-yard touchdown on just the team’s second offensive snap.
This touchdown was Ward’s 30th of the season, breaking the Miami single-season record for passing touchdowns, a mark previously held by Steve Walsh since 1988.
Ward’s achievement also strengthens his case for the Heisman Trophy. Heading into the Georgia Tech matchup, FanDuel listed him as the favorite, although ESPN had the Hurricanes as 9.5-point favorites. Despite trailing 14-10 at halftime, Ward had yet another opportunity to enhance his Heisman resume.
