The New York Rangers may be compelled to give goaltender Igor Shesterkin the huge contract he’s been seeking. The 28-year-old star is aiming for a record-breaking deal at the end of this season, and he’s had an outstanding start to his contract year. While there is ongoing debate about whether the Rangers should meet his asking price, one New York defenseman has already made his decision.
Zac Jones says the Rangers should “pay the man” for being the best in the league
After another stellar performance from Igor Shesterkin in the Rangers’ victory over the New York Islanders on Sunday, hockey analyst Jonny Lazarus spoke with defenseman Zac Jones about Shesterkin’s play. When asked about his confidence with Shesterkin in net, Jones remarked:
“Pay the man. He’s the best goalie, no doubt about it. There’s no one better than Igor Shesterkin.”

Shesterkin recently rejected an eight-year, $11 million per year contract offer that would have made him the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history. Whatever salary he is now seeking, it is sure to be a steep one, and Jones clearly supports that.
Shesterkin is off to an incredible start in his contract year

After nine games, Shesterkin has earned six wins to begin the season, including a shutout in the Rangers’ opener against Pittsburgh. His current goals-against average stands at 2.22, and his save percentage is .933, both of which exceed his career averages.
Shesterkin is currently considered the frontrunner for this season’s Vezina Trophy, which will be awarded at the conclusion of the regular season. Given the significance of this year for the Russian goaltender, he could potentially earn his second Vezina Trophy, following his major contract extension this past summer.
