Marvin Mims Jr. is poised to be one of the NFL’s most dynamic deep threats in 2024.
Marvin Mims Jr. was one of the Denver Broncos’ most dynamic playmakers in 2023 but was significantly underutilized. Even head coach Sean Payton acknowledged this. So what will change to make him a breakout player in 2024? With Jerry Jeudy now catching passes in Cleveland, Mims Jr. no longer has a major obstacle to increased playing time. Not only is he poised to break out for the Broncos, but he could also become one of the league’s top breakout stars in 2024.

Mims Jr. should become a primary focus in the offense led by Nix and Payton. As Payton’s first-ever draft pick for the Broncos, Mims Jr. boasts blazing deep-threat speed and the lateral quickness to be a threat in the middle of the field. His ability to perform at all three levels of the passing attack is rare, and the Broncos have him ready to prove himself.

What would it take for Mims Jr. to be considered a breakout player? Looking at previous young receiver breakouts, such as Puka Nacua’s 1,486 yards and six touchdowns, Ja’Marr Chase’s 1,455 yards and thirteen touchdowns, and Justin Jefferson’s 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns, gives us a benchmark. For Mims Jr. to be considered a breakout, he would need to achieve over 1,000 yards, 75-plus catches, and at least eight touchdowns, especially with players like Courtland Sutton, Tim Patrick, and Troy Franklin also catching passes.

While Sutton and Patrick are likely to capture red zone opportunities, Mims Jr.’s speed and wide catch radius should enable him to rack up catches and yards.
In a few years, Marvin Mims will be that Rookie Draft second rounder that dynasty managers look back and say:

Consider Michael Thomas, who caught 149 passes for 1,725 yards and seven touchdowns in 2019 under Payton. While Mims Jr. and Thomas have different physical builds, Mims Jr. could be molded into a similar type of player in the right offense. A high-volume attack that consistently moves the ball down the field could see Mims Jr. achieving similar numbers.

Overall, Mims Jr. has tremendous potential. His height and weight may seem modest, but his explosiveness and top-end speed are rare. We’ve seen his big-play ability, and it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a consistent threat in the Broncos’ offense.
