The highly talented young shortstop from the Dominican Republic is anticipated to secure one of the largest signing bonuses with the Giants.

The international signing period is still a few months off, but the San Francisco Giants are reportedly connected to Josuar de Jesus Gonzalez, who is widely regarded as the top prospect in this year’s class. However, with the signing window opening on January 15, much can change, and being linked to a player doesn’t guarantee a deal will be finalized.

The Giants haven’t seen great returns from their investments in international free agents during the Farhan Zaidi era. Players like Marco Luciano, Luis Matos, and Jairo Pomares, who were parting gifts from Bobby Evans’ regime, have had mixed results in both the minors and majors.

Pomares had a strong bounce-back season in 2024, while Matos has shuffled between Sacramento and San Francisco, facing competition in a crowded outfield. As for Luciano, his future role remains somewhat uncertain.

In recent drafts, the Giants have developed more role players than true stars. Prospects like Aeverson Arteaga, Adrian Sugastey, and Diego Velasquez have performed well but haven’t yet reached a standout level. There’s still promise in some of the newer international signings, as many are still early in their careers.

Looking ahead to the 2025 international free agent market, the Giants are expected to sign Josuar de Jesus Gonzalez, MLB Pipeline’s top prospect, on January 15. While Luciano was also highly ranked six years ago, Gonzalez and Luciano are very different players. Luciano was known for his raw power, while Gonzalez is a more well-rounded prospect, projected to stick at shortstop, while Luciano is likely to shift to the outfield—something that’s been long anticipated.

Gonzalez’s greatest strength is his defense, with a strong and accurate arm, excellent footwork, and a natural feel for the position. Although he’s a good athlete with speed in the infield, he’s not a major threat on the base paths. At the plate, Gonzalez is a switch-hitter with impressive bat speed and good barrel control, standing out in last August’s 18U World Cup.

It’s important to remember that these young prospects are still developing, including Gonzalez. Although he’s a high-profile signing, time will tell how his career progresses. As of now, he’s expected to be ranked second in the Giants’ 2025 pre-season prospect rankings, behind the talented Bryce Eldridge.
