JUST IN: Chargers, Dolphins Battle For Pittsburgh Steelers’ Superstar For Trade

The Pittsburgh Steelers are 3-0 with former first-round pick Justin Fields at the helm, and his strong performance might pave the way for a Russell Wilson trade.

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback, but he might be traded before even playing a game for them. After injuries sidelined the Super Bowl-winning QB for the first three weeks, Justin Fields, a former first-round pick of the Chicago Bears, stepped in and seized the opportunity. So far, Fields has led the team to a 3-0 start, completing 73.3% of his passes for 518 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception, while also rushing for 90 yards and a touchdown.

While Fields hasn’t suddenly become an MVP candidate, his steady, composed play style has proven effective for the Steelers, making Wilson potentially expendable. With several teams possibly seeking a starting-caliber quarterback, the Steelers might consider trading him, especially if they decide to part ways before he hits free agency. The Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers stand out as logical landing spots.

Dolphins, Chargers Could Trade For Russell Wilson With Justin Fields Thriving

The Miami Dolphins’ quarterback issues continue to pile up. With Tua Tagovailoa out indefinitely, head coach Mike McDaniel and the team turned to seventh-round pick Skylar Thompson. However, that plan quickly unraveled as Thompson suffered a chest injury in Week 3. While the extent of the injury is still unclear, he didn’t return to the game and was ruled out. Miami lacks a solid third option, which could push them to consider trading a decent draft pick to Pittsburgh for Russell Wilson.

If Thompson is sidelined, the Dolphins will be left with recently signed Tyler Huntley and journeyman Tim Boyle competing for the starting role. Neither option is ideal, as both quarterbacks are limited at this stage of their careers. Even if Thompson returns, his skillset is more suited for a backup role. Though Russell Wilson is no longer at his MVP level, he remains a more reliable option than any of these quarterbacks.

Is Justin Herbert Ok?

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has been struggling with a series of injuries over the past few months. The former first-round pick sustained a Lisfranc injury early in training camp, followed by a high-ankle sprain in Week 2, which worsened in Week 3. Herbert sat out the second half of the team’s Week 3 loss to the Steelers, but reports suggest he plans to play in Week 4 against the Kansas City Chiefs. While Herbert may be ready for the challenge, Jim Harbaugh should consider trading for Russell Wilson if Herbert’s injury issues persist.

A healthy Justin Herbert is clearly superior to Russell Wilson, but he appears to be just a couple of hard hits away from a long-term absence. Should that happen, the Chargers will need a better option than Taylor Heinicke to lead the offense. While Quentin Johnston and Ladd McConkey have shown potential in the first three weeks, the overall supporting cast remains weak. Wilson could likely manage with these two, and acquiring him for a half-season likely wouldn’t be too costly.
