Fueled by a strong start from Luis Severino, two scoreless innings from the bullpen, and two hits from NL MVP candidate Francisco Lindor, the New York Mets won their fifth consecutive game on Monday, defeating the Boston Red Sox 4-1 and moving within half a game of a postseason spot.

The Mets had a rough start to the season, finishing May with a 24-33 record. Their turnaround has been remarkable, but manager Carlos Mendoza is keeping things in perspective, cautioning his players, fans, and the baseball world: “We haven’t done anything yet,” he said, signaling that the team is aiming for more.

“We’re playing meaningful games in September, but we haven’t accomplished anything,” Mendoza told SNY. “We know our position, and the focus remains on taking it one game at a time, one series at a time, and letting the season unfold.”

This “one game at a time” mentality has been instrumental for the Mets, a team defying all odds and preseason expectations.

The Mets are now 10 games over .500

They traded away so much talent last year that even the executives pointed to 2025 as their target year for contention. Yet here we are, with the Mets on a hot streak, holding a 74-64 record — the first time all season they’ve been 10 games over .500 — and winning 13 of their last 19 games.

While manager Carlos Mendoza remains cautious about mentioning the “playoffs,” catcher Luis Torrens, who had two hits batting ninth on Monday, acknowledged that October is the goal.

“Despite our slow start, we keep pushing to make the playoffs because that’s ultimately our goal,” Torrens said through an interpreter.

Regardless of whether they make the playoffs, the Mets have plenty to be optimistic about. They have star players, solid pitchers, promising prospects, a good manager, and a shrewd front office. The future looks bright, and it could begin in 2024.
