Battie was discharged from the hospital on Saturday, and Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze provided an update on his recovery during the SEC head coaches teleconference on Wednesday.
Freeze had visited Battie just before the call and shared how frequently they stay in touch.
“We FaceTime at least once a week, usually with him or his mom if he’s not feeling up to it,” Freeze said. “Yesterday was my first time seeing him in person. We had planned two other visits, but bad weather prevented us from flying. Today was the first time I got to spend the entire morning with him, his mom, dad, and sister before his therapy began, and it was really good to see him.”
Freeze also discussed what the next steps in Battie’s recovery might look like now that he is out of the hospital.
“He’s in a battle,” Freeze said. “The focus now is on his recovery and rehab, and getting his brain to function properly again. Walking is still a challenge for him, but his spirit is strong. He’s determined to get up to Auburn for a game, and I was glad to spend some time with him.”
In his first season with the Tigers in 2023, Battie played in every game and was the primary kick-off returner. He rushed for 227 yards and scored one touchdown on 51 carries.
Before transferring to Auburn, Battie played three seasons at South Florida, where he earned All-American honors in 2022.
