Before the new season begins, the Colts make a daring choice about the remaining 2024 draft selections.
The belief among fans is that being drafted by a team does not guarantee success in life. It’s only generally true for the top ten picks, though, and your chances of making a club decrease as you move down the draft board. For the Indianapolis Colts, for instance, you’ll need to get selected early in the draft, much like Anthony Richardson. On cutdown day, the Colts also made the decision to forgo three of their picks in the 2024 NFL Draft.
According to Mike Clay on X, formerly Twitter, the Colts “cut their seventh, sixth, and one of their fifth round picks from April’s draft” on Tuesday. These cuts were defensive tackle Jonah Laulu and cornerbacks Jaylin Simpson and Micah Abraham.
Who are the Colts’ roster cuts?
While these players didn’t make the Colts’ final 53-man roster, there’s still a chance for them to join the practice squad if they clear waivers.
Moreover, injuries were not a factor in these roster cuts. Instead, they align with Chris Ballard’s approach as the Colts’ GM, where he accumulates draft picks to gain more flexibility and leverage in the draft. Over his eight drafts, Ballard has cut at least one of his former picks, either due to injuries or their inability to move up the depth chart.
Given that these players were selected in the later rounds of the draft, the Colts may have felt they needed additional development before being ready for the team.
For example, sixth-round pick Micah Abraham has shown good instincts but often missed assignments and failed to make the top kick coverage units.
Fifth-round pick Jaylin Simpson displayed some aggressiveness on short routes, but he struggled with deep coverage and also couldn’t secure a spot on the special teams.
Lastly, seventh-round defensive tackle Jonah Laulu faced a tough challenge from the beginning, competing against the formidable duo of DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart, two of the NFL’s top defensive tackles.
