Breaking: Raiders to Cut QB Before Start of Season

The Las Vegas Raiders have established Gardner Minshew as their starting quarterback, with Aidan O’Connell set to back him up. However, there may still be some competition for the third-string quarterback spot.

Currently, Nathan Peterman and undrafted rookie Carter Bradley are also on the roster. Peterman, a veteran, has experience in offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s system from the past two seasons.

Despite this, the Raiders might not carry three quarterbacks on the active roster. David Kenyon of Bleacher Report suggests that the team should consider cutting Peterman and placing him on the practice squad.

“Given that the Raiders don’t have many significant cut candidates, let’s focus on Nathan Peterman. Las Vegas should release him to free up a roster spot in case a promising waiver claim becomes available,” Kenyon wrote in an August 23 article. “Peterman could then be placed on the practice squad rather than the active roster.”

If Peterman is cut, it’s unlikely there will be much demand for him, making him a likely candidate for the practice squad. While the third-string quarterback typically doesn’t see playing time during an ideal season, retaining Peterman could be beneficial due to his familiarity with the offensive system.

Antonio Pierce Talks Carter Bradley

Bradley hasn’t been a prominent name this offseason. As the son of former Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, his college career was modest, throwing 61 touchdowns and 27 interceptions over six years at Toledo and South Alabama.

Head coach Antonio Pierce has announced that Bradley will start as the quarterback in the Raiders’ third preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

“In his first game, all Bradley did was hand the ball off nine times, and then we let him throw last week,” Pierce said during his August 21 press conference. “He did a good job again last night, so it will be interesting to see him in the first half and also in the third quarter. He’s been growing. Like all rookies, he has his ups and downs, and with a quarterback competition, there aren’t a lot of reps. But he’ll have a great chance to show what he’s got on Friday.”

Peterman, who has been in the NFL since 2017, is a familiar presence, so it makes sense for the Raiders to give Bradley a closer look. This could be the most pivotal game of his football career so far.

Can Carter Bradley Beat out Nathan Peterman?

Peterman, who recently joined the team and has a connection with Getsy, doesn’t have Pierce’s loyalty. Bradley still has a shot at securing the third quarterback spot if he performs well in the preseason game against the 49ers. If he can demonstrate accuracy and composure, the Raiders might be more inclined to keep him and explore his potential. However, both may be competing for a practice squad position, and as an undrafted rookie, Bradley would likely be content with any role on the team.
