The Boston Red Sox are preparing for a busy offseason, with a primary objective of finding another ace to pair with Garrett Crochet atop their rotation. While much of the speculation has centered on Minnesota Twins standout Joe Ryan, a new name has emerged as a possible target: Cincinnati Reds fireballer Hunter Greene.

According to Fansided’s Cody Williams, one proposed scenario would have the Red Sox trading for Greene—a hard-throwing right-hander with electric stuff—in a deal that might look like this:
Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Hunter Greene
Cincinnati Reds receive: OF Jarren Duran, LHP Payton Tolle, OF Jhostnyxon Garcia
Such a move could significantly elevate Boston’s pitching staff. Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow has built up the club’s pitching depth over recent years, even if some past additions—like Walker Buehler and Dustin May—didn’t pan out as hoped.

The Red Sox clearly understand their need for elite rotation help after fading late in the year and falling short in the postseason. Greene could be exactly the high-end arm they’ve been missing.
Greene’s 2025 performance underscores his value: a 7–4 record, 2.76 ERA, 132 strikeouts, and a 0.938 WHIP across 107 innings.
While his workload was limited, Boston has experience managing pitchers returning from injuries—Garrett Crochet being a prime example after leading nearly all of baseball in innings post-Tommy John surgery. The team believes they could take a similar approach with Greene.

Trading Duran would certainly sting, especially considering his importance in the outfield, but it might also help alleviate the team’s logjam at that position. The Red Sox seem willing to make that sacrifice if it means landing a pitcher of Greene’s caliber. Should he stay healthy, the deal could be one of the defining moves of the offseason.
As the winter unfolds, the Red Sox are expected to stay aggressive in pursuit of upgrades. With talents like Greene potentially available, Boston appears poised for a transformative offseason aimed at returning to serious contention in 2024.
